I have been involved in numerous martial arts and fitness programs for more than 61 years. Many of these programs I followed included various martial art routines in order to be in the best shape possible. I have practiced karate aerobics, boxing aerobics and of course kickboxing aerobic programs over the years. What makes this particular book and program (Cardio Kickboxing Elite by Frank Thiboutot) unique is that unlike other boxing aerobics, Tai Bo and karate aerobic programs, the emphasis in this program is to practice actual striking against various types of bags. This is the only way to really develop striking power. This is not to say that you should never practice just punching and striking the air, but the real focus is on developing realistic punching and kicking skills, whether or not you intend to compete in the sport of kickboxing. In my opinion, one should practice both shadow boxing and striking the speed bag, body bag and heavy bag for a complete combative style workout.

This 156 page manual is organized into eight chapters plus vital information on other factors related to this kickboxing program. Chapter one gives an overview of the sport of kickboxing, which is not as popular as it once was due to the popularity of “the ultimate fights.” Cardio kickboxing is covered in chapter two. Kickboxing fundamentals is taught in chapter three. A general description of the workout is explained in chapter four. Chapter five deals with the basic workout outline. Chapter six shows intermediate techniques. Advanced techniques are shown in chapter seven and optional workouts are explored in chapter eight.

This book also has a basic equipment list, an overview of rules and regulations in sport karate and kickboxing. A glossary of kickboxing terms, exercise and fitness associations, a resource guide and sample training schedule is also explained in this text.

Even though this book is somewhat dated, having been published in 2001, it still has some great and practical information for anyone who desires to train in kickboxing for sport, fitness and self-defense. The black and white photographs are clear and easy to follow. You might want to check this book out if you are into all kinds of fitness programs.
