How to Quit Being a Chump

I got this book to improve my Muay Thai practice and found that it’s great at breaking down boxing fundamentals into digestible, step-by-step instructions. The emphasis on spinal awareness was something new to me – it’s not just about throwing punches; it’s about posture, balance, and movement … will be interesting to apply what I’ve learned from the book to the actual practice!

As someone who has always been fascinated by boxing yet deterred by the intimidation factor of walking into a boxing gym, “Boxing From Chump to Champ” by Andrew Hudson has been nothing short of a revelation. The author’s personal journey resonates deeply, especially his candid admission of the fears and insecurities he faced before becoming a seasoned boxer and coach.
What sets this guide apart is its empathetic approach. It’s not just a cold, step-by-step manual; it’s a mentorship in written form. Hudson’s warm, encouraging tone makes you feel like he’s right there with you, cheering you on. He gets it because he’s been there, and this understanding is woven into every piece of advice, every shared technique, and every motivational tip.

One particular highlight is the section on discovering what boxing style suits you. It’s a testament to the book’s commitment to seeing boxing as not just a sport, but an extension of individuality. Every reader, regardless of why they’re turning to boxing, is given the tools to make the sport their own.
Furthermore, the book’s impact extends beyond the physical techniques. Having had a dad who was a boxer, and having enjoyed watching boxing on TV since I was a child, it was a thrill to come across a book that so thoroughly discusses boxing as the science it is. Every element of this thrilling sport is presented with clarity and detail here, with references to how they were employed by the most notable fighters of the past hundred years, from Jack Dempsey to Tyson Fury. Truly a remarkable work, whether you’re a young athlete considering a career in boxing to those of us would would rather understand it from a safe distance, rather than get knocked around.

In his boxing manual for beginners (Boxing: From Chump to Champ), Andrew Hudson walks the reader through a step-by-step process that should be followed by those brand-new to the sweet science of boxing.
From the most basic foundation, a boxer’s stance, through a detailed blow-by-blow description (pun intended!) of how to create and follow through the major punches that every boxer must know, Hudson’s prose is clear, his expertise is unquestionable, and his passion for the sport shows up in each and every sentence he writes.
The only thing stopping me from giving this the five-star review it deserves is the need for this manuscript to be professionally edited. There are quite a few editing issues that should be addressed to consider this a professional publication.
So, if you can ignore the editing issues and pay attention to the heart of the book, you will find an invaluable guide to help the beginner start the process of moving, as Hudson indicates in the title, from a chump to a champ!

It delves deeply into boxing history, punch types, psychology, defense, and tactics. Toe-stepping, parrying, shady boxing, and defensive stances are all covered.
